Paddy Gibney Performs at Back Alley Pub
January 2, 2003
Paddy Gibney will take the stage Saturday, March 2, at the Back Alley to welcome the cool winds of March.
Patrick “Paddy” Gibney came to the U.S. on a soccer scholarship in 1987 from Ireland. He attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and now makes his home in Fayetteville.
Throughout his 14 years in the U.S., he has lived in Boston and San Francisco as well as North Carolina and also has spent periods of time back in Dublin.
His borther and sister both live in Wilmington but his parents still call Dublin home and he goes back to visit at least once a year.
Musically, a Paddy Gibney show will provide a diverse mix of rock and ballads with plenty of variety and emotion.
“Music should make you feel something,” he says.
But don’t think Gibney’s show is all tears — there’s some traditional Irish melodies and plenty of those Guiness-inspired drinking songs in his repetoire as well.
His desire to learn guitar came from a huge love of Irish traditional music and a love of contemporary artists like U2 and Van Morrison. He names these, along with songwriters like Sting and R.E.M. as some of his musical influences.
His first CD of orignial songs will be released in the Spring, but Sandhills residents can catch a pre-St. “Paddy’s” concert at the Back Alley, Gatewood Ave., Southern Pines Saturday.
Admission is charged.
